Red Shoes

A loud clicking sound could be heard from across the hall. I could feel whoever it was swaying down. This was the fifth night in a row that we were plagued by the clicking sound. At first, I thought it was one of the spoiled kids playing a prank on us but it all changed when the incident happened.

Two days ago, Mariah was found dead in the toilet. According to Sarah, her roommate, she had gone to have a smoke and didn't return when she was supposed to. Sarah went to look for her the next morning and found her body.

There were several rumors as to the cause of her death and the school refused to tell us anything. Amongst all the rumors flying around, the one that sounded absurd was that she might have been beaten to death.

Princeton's College is known for its strict rules and flogging is frowned upon. Our principal is so strict that he once suspended a teacher for spanking a student.

I confronted Sarah to be sure of what I heard but got no confirmation. She was too shaken to pay attention to anything else.

We first heard the clicking sound 5 days ago. It sounded like the click of a heel, at first I thought it must be one of the matrons doing her rounds but when I questioned Mrs. Rita, the head matron, she told me wearing heels was prohibited.

Nobody could say exactly what or who it was that was tormenting us with the annoying clicking sound. Last night something terrible happened, two students went missing and although their bodies were never found, their disappearance was enough to frighten our principal.

To commemorate our last day in school, a party was thrown. I don't know which smart pants thought it wise to throw a Christmas party when we were being picked off like sheep. It was still a good few days to Christmas so I wasn't ready to hear the bells jingle.

Eve, my roommate had managed to convince me to wear a dress and attend this charade of a party. A few minutes into the party I already felt like scratching out my eardrums. The music was too loud and I was beginning to feel irritated.

The past event was the talk of the night. Everyone seemed to have a theory but nobody could say what was happening. I got tired of listening to their gibberish so I left.

The distance between the classroom which was upgraded to a club and the dormitory was just a stone's throw. It was a familiar route, one I took every day so fear was the last thing I felt.

I was almost at the end of the hall when I heard the familiar clicking sound. My heart skipped a beat and I felt my soul leave my body. I looked in the direction of the sound and stayed frozen at my spot.

The answer to the mystery behind the clicking heels lay before me yet I was too afraid to move a muscle.

"This is my opportunity to find the truth" I whispered

I shook off my fear and followed the sound. The further I walked the farther I was from the makeshift clubhouse. I was at the end of the hall when I noticed I couldn't hear the clicking sound anymore.

Another thing that caught my attention was the fact that all the classrooms I had passed were locked except the very one in front of me. The silence sent chills all over my body and I felt numb.

I took a deep breath and walked into the class. It was empty and nothing looked out of place. I had almost given up on my quest when I noticed a pair of legs sticking out from under the table.

I pulled the legs and screamed at what I saw. Lying in front of me was Eve, her body was lined with marks as if she had been beaten to death. Her eyes stared into nothing and her head lay at the wrong angle.

The vibrant friend I knew was reduced to a bloody pulp. I felt my eyes tear up and choke on my tears.

"What's going on?" I asked myself

In response to my question, the clicking sound resumed. With each breath I took, the sound became louder. The door opened with a bang and that's when the truth

was revealed.

"Red shoes" I whispered
