On Eziokwu: the truth and Divine architecture.

Odumodu has spent most of 2023 teasing Eziokwu, a mixtape he calls the truth. He has also spent 2023 doing a number of things, like several campus tours and doing a litany of guest verses for established acts and for a ton of underground rappers. Significantly, though, by any deliberate act or not, he has garnered  for himself all the co- signs one can possibly get as a rising musician. There have been shouts from Davido, don jazzy, Skepta, and even English football player, Declan rice. In this chaotic and undoubtedly divine rise to stardom, seeing Declan rice sing along to “ Declan Rice” in that instagram  video all the way back in April, seems a befitting culmination to how absurd odumodu’s rise has been this year.

Regardless of the recent bustle currently  in Odumodu’s universe, three things have stayed steady: His music output, the perpetual looming presence of Teezee( the new Birdman), and how he continues to polarize his listeners. Odumodu has 5 albums, including two compilations with his crew, anti world gangsters, to his credit on Spotify. This is a haul of music fellow musicians or really, any creative would be envious of- as odumodu seems to just rap and rap and rap. A remarkably prolific spurt Teezee seems to just enable, flow.

On whether quality matches quantity with his output, Odumodu’s self proclaimed okporoko music sounds pretty novel and at the same time vaguely familiar, leading to a disorienting feel the first time one listens. It’s highlife, rap and something okporoko-like.

For now, Only him and Teezee seem to know what is going on. The consumers ? No one knows, it’s hella provocative and it gets the over 1.2 million monthly Spotify listeners going . His music is that sweet nothing you’re not supposed to enjoy but you do anyway-Something like the accepted haram of this time.

His lyrical content is also hilariously vivid, introspective, and in tune with real-life events and X posts. It’s essentially the new-speak of the day. Take for instance song titles like: saint Obi, Mc oluomo and Kevin de Bruyne pass. These are clear metaphors for things he wants to allude to, and even though meaning is open to varying interpretations, Odumodu has himself come on X to declare what he means by

His lyrics in all caps. The truth is, no one else is doing this: Odumodu’s direct interface with fans and collaborators is unparalleled and never- before - seen. It’s almost as if one could literally touch odumodu through his raps, X posts, and interviews.

Eziokwu has a slew of features that normally, would  mark a dj Khaled album or more similarly, olamide’s 2020, Carpe Diem. But odumodu is barely one year into mainstream exposure and Eziokwu’s track list has a string of guest appearances, that in a way, provide direct insight into how much has transpired in his career in such short time.

It may be a hefty claim to make, but, Eziokwu also draws parallels with Rich forever. The 2012 mixtape by Rick Ross that has has been touted as that one mixtape that really should have been an album. On how these parallels are drawn, one can look to the track-list, beat selection, and even the purposefulness of the music. Odumodu could have named Eziokwu like a diary entry: 2023, my chaotic rise to stardom, and it would still work.

Finally, even though there were huge drum rolls, a promo video in which he and Teezee shoot at people, postponing the release date, and countless X posts announcing the “ truth is coming”, There’s something cavalier about giving away high quality music for free in the manner native records have done with Eziokwu. Perhaps, calling it a mixtape diffuses the pressure that comes with a debut offering. Something like an insurance policy for it flops, as opposed to the rave reviews that follow an unprecedented success. Whatever the rationale behind the 14 track mixtape, again, only him and Teezee know.
