"Wait up, Favour!"
I heard Martins calling my name, but at this point, I could care less. I kept on walking towards the junction, under the rain.
"I'm sorry babe. That's just a misunderstanding," he called, running up from behind me.
"Favour!"
My eyes were peppery from the mascara which had washed down my face. I must have looked scary because one woman saw me from the safety of her shop and spat on the floor.
"What?" I replied Martins, turning to face him.
"Let's talk under that shade, the rain is too much," Martins said, pointing towards the woman's shop.
"Whatever you want to say, you better explain now. What was that woman doing on the floor in your bedroom? Who is she?" I asked, my anger slowly ebbing away.
Martins held his body as his teeth gnashed from the cold, "She is my neighbor. She came to my room to charge her phone but her husband came and started insulting her because in his custom, a woman is not supposed to be in the house of another man especially under this rain. I think they were fighting before she came to charge her phone, however, he thought we were cheating, which is not true but he started beating her in my room and when I tried to intervene, he fought me. In the process of her trying to separate us, she fell and hit her head on the tiles. Her husband ran away. That's the truth!"
"You think I'm going to believe that lie? How long would it take you to call for help? Why were you dragging her to the bathroom in a trail of her own blood?" I wanted to ask more questions but he interrupted me.
"Her husband ran away. If I call for help, people would think I murdered her and the whole thing happened five minutes before you came…"
"Five minutes and I didn't hear the struggle from outside?"
"Favour, I am innocent. I did not kill that lady, her husband did. I was only dragging her inside to wait for my neighbors who I had called. Don't you understand? I'm scared and my life just started blooming…"
"You are wicked. You killed her. I'm sure that's why you wanted me to abort the baby so you could use the child for money sacrifice. Our shepherd told me that you are a murderer and you will kill to become rich," I felt disgusted at the sight of him.
"Believe me, I am not what you think I am and that prophet abi shepherd is a liar. He doesn't hear God. I've told you he is a scam…"
"It's everything about you that is a scam. I told you to do Yahoo, the innocent type, you refused but now, you have become a murderer. Ah, you killed a woman!"
At this point, Martins was fed up. He ignored me and started walking down the street. One of his neighbors' was walking up to him when a speeding okada lost it's balance and swerved off the muddy road, hitting Martin in the process.
Martin tried to get away from the okada but a tire was still spinning and it pinned his head down.
I ran towards him but the sight was gruesome. The okada had fractured his skull and he was bleeding out. His neighbor rushed to the scene and moved the okada away. The okada rider was dead and his lifeless eyes were staring at the dark cloud against the heavy rain.
I felt tears sting my eyes as I held Martin's bleeding head. He wanted to say something but the breeze carried his voice away. His eyes were red but he managed a smile and held my hand.
People began to gather and I could hear some people exclaiming. His neighbor rushed to my side and carried him but Martin had passed. All that was left was his cold body.
There was lightning, the few people who were gathered ran away but I was on the floor, crying and the sky cried with me.
