I am my Barbers most regular customer
He once asked why I come for haircuts
Way too frequently
I tell him there is already too much on my head
And I don’t want my hair adding to all of it
But If I am ever brave enough to let it grow
I will weave it
But while everyone will admire the braids
Only I will know that those are no cornrows but race tracks
Because there is a lot running through my mind
And this one seems to be a marathon because these thought never seem to reach the finish line
What do you do when your brain doesn’t know the difference between sleep and sprint
So every time you lay on your mat
It’s on your mask
Get set to sleep
You are ready
But then a trigger goes off
A random thought thinks it’s an umpire and triggers your anxiety
And now there is a war in your mind and your sleep is caught in the cross-fire
Eyes wide open like you just dodged a bullet
Rolling from side to side on your bed as if you take cover
But do you know how to make a bulletproof from a blanket
You hide under your pillow as if to play hide and seek with slumber
And you find yourself lucky every single time sleep finds you
The next morning
You wake up to the news of Bandits hijacking a train in Kaduna and you wonder
If it would also make it to the news if these journalists knew
That like the bandits
Your worries have been hijacking your train of thoughts
I have offered all my focus as ransom
And now I can’t even afford to pay attention
All I am left with is a mustard seed of faith
The holy book says it can move a mountain
But we are about to find out if it can calm a raging storm
So peace be still
Peace be still
My anxiety says the quality of these piece is still in doubt
But my faith says be anxious for nothing
Now there’s a war in my head
Anxiety says be Anxious
My faith says for Nothing
Be Anxious for nothing
Cause the hairs of my head are numbered by God
No matter how many times I barb them
