We all know who Divine Ikubor is, the 23 year old who found his way into Mavin records and has been causing havoc in the music industry ever since (the good kind sha).
Some love him for his looks, others his unique sound while some people just resonate with his energy. Love him or hate him, no one can deny his giant strides with a craft that has brought so many Nigerians to the limelight.
Recently bro sold out the O2 arena giving an awe-inspiring performance that will not be forgotten in a hurry, not just because of the musical delivery but also the sort of aesthetics employed to garnish the experience. This actually points to this young man’s prowess in staying relevant and keeping pace with the rest of industry.
In 2019, Rema released his debut body of work Rema EP, a perfect example of his incredible versatility. Other massive tracks such as “Ginger Me” and “Beamer” only solidified his position as a frontrunner in the new generation of Afrobeat artists.
Fast forward to 2022 and Remy boy released his debut album Rave and Roses, we got the feel of a more mature performer. “Divine” the album’s intro telling his story, captivating sounds like “Hold me” and “FYN” which are masterpieces of music production, “Are you there” being a reference to the country’s problems and classic Rema tunes such as “Calm down” and “Mara”; you can never complain of monotony in this guy’s work.
His sound can never be put in a box. Constantly sampling and utilizing different styles of music, Rema never releases the same song twice. Today he’s on a trap beat, tomorrow he could release an afro-pop song and the next day my guy can be humming like an indian. That being said, you never see what’s coming with Rema.
Apart from the music, it’s difficult to point out another Nigerian artist with a better brand. Although his record label has everything to do with his exceptional brand management, it takes a high level of discipline to stay in check being mindful of the fame and attention such celebrities get.
Like a Lion on the hunt, Divine moves with intentionality and a strong sense of focus. His target? Only God knows but you just have a feeling it’s not out of reach and every year he moves progressively, never staying in the same spot.
By the time Ravage Uprising (Rema’s O2 concert) was sold out last year it was settled, Rema had attained global stardom becoming only the 5th artist after Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy and Asake to sell out the historic arena. Also, commercially speaking his numbers are crazy. Rema is the first African to achieve one billion Spotify streams as a lead artist on an Afrobeat track, if that doesn’t earn Legend status then me sef no sabi again. We can only sit back and watch greatness flourish before our eyes.
Here’s the full concert from the O2 arena if you missed it👇
