In the bustling streets of Calabar, there's a shadow that looms over the innocence of many children – a shadow cast by the misappropriation of a name: Skolombo. Once a mere term associated with a notorious gang of robbers and cultists, Skolombo has morphed into a label unfairly slapped onto vulnerable children. But behind this misnomer lies a tale of pain, stigma, and the urgent need for understanding.

Sources say the Skolombo gang, infamous for its reign of terror in the 2010s, instilled fear and chaos in the hearts of Calabar residents. As they grew in notoriety, they preyed upon the most vulnerable, recruiting children on the streets into their ranks. The government, recognizing the severity of the situation, launched "Operation Skolombo" to combat this menace head-on.

However, amid the crackdown on the gang, an unintended consequence emerged – the association of all children living on the streets with the dreaded moniker, Skolombo. The truth is far more nuanced. Yes, some vulnerable children may have fallen victim to the allure of the gang, but not all children living on the streets are members of Skolombo. Many are victims themselves, longing for safety, education, and a chance at a better future.

Enter Street Priests, a beacon of hope in the midst of adversity. Our organization has tirelessly worked to rescue, rehabilitate, and empower these marginalized children. We understand the pain they endure, not just from the harsh realities of street life but also from the unjust stigma attached to them.

Imagine being a child, innocent and wide-eyed, only to be branded with a label that paints you as a criminal. It's a burden no child should bear. Yet, day after day, these children face discrimination, suspicion, and rejection simply because of where their circumstances.

But there is hope. Through our efforts and the support of compassionate individuals and organizations, we are rewriting the narrative. We are erasing the myth of Skolombo and replacing it with stories of resilience, determination, and triumph.

Every child deserves a chance to thrive, free from the shackles of prejudice. It's time we recognize the humanity within each of these children and offer them the love, support, and opportunities they deserve.

So, the next time you see a child roaming the streets of Calabar, instead of casting judgment, extend a hand of kindness. Together, we can rewrite their story, one of hope, dignity, and endless possibilities. Let's erase the myth of Skolombo and embrace the truth – that every child is worthy of love and belonging.
