Khair ad-Din Barbarossa wrote after the Spanish conquest of the fortress of Yenon, which was located on the outskirts of the port of Algiers:
When the fortress was in Spanish hands, they used to bombard the minarets when they heard the call to prayer. They did this only for amusement. But when we settled in Algiers, they stopped this heinous act out of fear of us. They were saddened by the loss of this entertainment.
When we captured the fortress, the artillery commander who had destroyed many minarets and killed many muezzins as they called to prayer was brought to me. I said to him:
"You, Ka/Far, are a skilled marksman... You destroyed the minaret with a single shell... Now see what a real shot is like."
Then I ordered the Ka/Far to be placed in the muzzle of a cannon and fired into the sea. I beheaded his assistants, along with ten artillery soldiers. I ordered the rest to be thrown into the dungeons.
