There is one old woman particularly known for being notorious in the neighborhood. She is Iya korede, some call her grandma but most people know her nickname as Shina Rambo - a popular troublesome criminal in the 1970's.
This Grandma lives in a face-me-i-face-you house like every one else in the street. Her no-nonsense attitude is a warning to not cross your boundaries when you are dealing with her.
There are three incidents that stands out among all her records of trouble. The first one is her iconic fight with the landlord's wife on an unfortunate day. The landlord's wife is not a saint either, she likes to do gra gra and insult tenants anyhow. She feels like a super commando, until the day Iya korede dealt with her. The cause of the fight is obvious that it wasn't really the cause, but an excuse to unleash days of malice and hatred. This was how it happened...
The landlord's wife said she kept a bucket of water in the general kitchen to cook. She got busy with other things and left the water there to use later. Iya korede claimed to have met the water at her own corner of the kitchen and used it, this is the reason for the boxing match that took place.
Everyone knows Iya korede aka Shina Rambo has a particular brown, Jean trousers she wears to fight, there is no other like it. The trouser carries her huge weight almost perfectly, enough to throw kicks and jump high.
So when Iya korede came out with her trousers zipped tight everyone came out to watch the show.
"olórí burúkú"
"kọ́ni da fún àwọn tó bí ẹ"
"ìyá ẹ"
"òní kú rẹ"
"ogún ló máa pá ẹ"
The two women cursed and pulled each other's clothes, giving hot slaps and blows. They dragged each other to the open area outside the house and continued the heated fight. Iya korede had the upper hand, onlookers could tell that she was winning.
The second memorable fight was the one Iya korede got into with some NEPA officials. This one almost caused her to be arrested by the police.
The people living in that street have been denied access to power supply for two months. Majority of them depended on candle lights and I - pass - my - neighbor - generator, so due to the power outage in their street no one paid the NEPA bill.
Then one day these NEPA officials came in with their van and equipments to finally dismantle the transformer. They said the people were not saying the truth, they claimed the other streets payed off their bills and so they have light, but this street has been owing a five months fee.
While everyone pleaded with them, the NEPA officials went ahead to bring out their tools. That was when Iya korede appeared in her special trousers and a random Ankara blouse. She dragged the young man climbing the pole and pulled him down, then she stood with her hands on her hips daring anyone to come and cut the wire.
The officials got angry at her rude outburst, and suddenly the small area turned into an intense fight. Huge, tall and fat Iya korede single-handedly tackled three men to the ground at once. Her boldness made the people feel courageous too and before the blink of an eye it has turned into a street fight of NEPA officials and the people - area boys included.
It didn't take long for the nearest police station to burst into the scene, threatening to shoot with the sakabula they call a gun.
Everywhere scattered instantly - each person to his or her house, no one cared to explain. However the message has been passed, NEPA can not cut their wire and they must supply them light or else they won't pay the bill. Iya korede was hailed for that one.
Then the third fight happened that got people talking for days, this one involved her and a pastor's wife. There are two groups of church goers in the neighborhood, the first group comprises of people that attend cele - a white garment church. The second group of people attend Holy Ghost Fire evangelical ministry. The wife of the second church pastor sells drinks, biscuits, beverages and snacks in a big shop at the second street. Iya Tunde has many customers and even Iya korede buys food items from her some times.
However Iya korede doesn't know that this woman's husband - the pastor at the Holy Ghost fire evangelical church, is always using her as a bad example whenever he is preaching. He does it all the time and subtly makes nasty comment about Iya korede to his church members, saying things like "some women who call themselves mothers behave like wild, local, dogs in this community" - everyone knows who he is referring to.
On one unfortunate day, Ayomide - Iya Korede's twelve year old granddaughter went to buy something from Iya Tunde the pastor's wife. Ayomide took the bad money she collected from the shop a day before to buy something at the same place, since no other seller wanted to collect the money.
When she got there she didn't see the sales girl that attended to her a day before, instead she met Iya Tunde. After buying all she needed, she payed and the woman refused to take the money. She told Ayomide to drop everything she just bought and leave her shop with "that rubbish money". Ayomide tried telling Iya Tunde that no one will collect it from her, and besides this is the shop that gave it to her as change.
Did Iya Tunde listen? No. Instead she started shouting and insulting the girl and her grandmother. Saying things like;
"Owo oshi"
"orí ìyá là ìyá ẹ ó pè"
"kò ní dá fún ẹ"
"abi olórí bùruku là wọn to bí ẹ ní"
It was obvious to Ayomide that the insults is more than this reason, especially with how Iya Tunde keeps taunting her to call her grandmother. And so Iya korede came wearing her brown trousers, swearing and cursing as she neared the shop. People started gathering around the place wanting to know the gist of the fight.
Iya Tunde's threat to call the police fell on deaf ears, because the dangerous looking grandma has carried bottles and smashed it, moving closer as if to stab her. It didn't help that some people tried to calm the two of them down, the little thieves around were taking advantage of the situation and stealing whatever they can easily lay hands on in Iya Tunde's shop.
Finally the fight cooled down but the damage has been done. It brought an enmity between the pastor, his family and church members verses Iya korede, her neighbors and fellow church members too.
