Ada stepped into the ward for the first time, her stethoscope hanging around her neck like a medal she hadn’t earned. The walls whispered stories. The patients barely moved.


Today wasn’t just her first hospital posting — it was the first time she’d stand face to face with someone else's pain.


A nurse handed her gloves. A surgeon called for assistance. A man on the table was cut open, layer by living layer.


“Do you know what this is?” the surgeon asked, pointing.

Ada swallowed. “The… peritoneum?”

“Correct. Don’t faint.”
