2016, what a year it was to live.

2016? What a year!

Going down memory lane, I couldn't resist the sensation of nostalgia which engulfed me in respect of the aforementioned year. I found myself reminiscing about what was a decade ago, but felt like just yesterday. Hence, the irresistible urge to pen down this semi-autobiographical piece which contains real characters and seeks to drive emotions and occurrences which once lived into the reader's mind - not in a way of holding onto the past, but rather reliving it. Walk with me - this promises to be intriguing and interesting.

2016? What a year!

The year was 2016 and I have vivid memories of Ashikong bracing up to leave the walls of Crutech, shoulders high, unsure about what to expect but placing a firm belief in himself and his creator like he does to this day. I remember the feud between Olamide and Don jazzy on the 1st of January, which birthed the mood for the rest of that year, Wizkid's 'one dance' with Drake which signified a major turning point in Afro beats as a genre. Justin Bieber's 'sorry' echoing through radio stations and handsets which existed at the time, Mr. Eazy clinging the 'next rated' awards, Kizz Daniel's 'new era' with woju, laye, and of course - lovers favourite, 'mama'. Tekno running riot and reekado banks taking over the streets. What a time it was to be alive.

2016? What a year!

I recall Andokie within the walls of Unical - doing a course she absolutely didn't love but yeah, it's life I guess. She did us proud regardless. I reminisce about the 'dog ears' Snapchat filters which had everyone in a chokehold, a great population of Nigerians sticking out their tongues whenever a phone was around just to trigger the 'dog's look - the cinematic look Snapchat gave especially to those who were privileged to own androids. The phones which screamed status were the iphone 6, and Samsung Galaxy. Facebook names like jack ruther, xpensif xtar and khalifa were predominant. Young adults and teenagers texting in cases like 'hw r u? Fyn, tym, xup? Kul.. and the list goes on and on. Mehn, nostalgia

2016? What a year!

Ukwukwen bracing up to become a prefect, the looming feeling of an almost finished finished face while still facing the reality of staying focused. I recall the statement make-up which ladies wore, no clean girl a2016? What a year!

I cast my mind back to the estate parties that was held for children, egg races , football tournaments between mothers and their children and the overall feeling of just being present at material points. Where did all that go?

2016? What a year

Unimuyabel and Igor parading the walls of Uncle effiong, playing at home and Emmanuel teasing the hell out of Veronica, pops announcement as a permanent secretary and the cacaphonic joy that followed. I remember the night that moved from despair to elation, mom's zeal every morning rushing to impact knowledge at Margaret-ekpo secondary school while still running the house smoothly and perfectly - the original 'feminist'. A lot of good times. I remember Leicester city winning the premier league, a fit which seemed impossible at the time especially for a relegation team.

A decade ago, lots of things have changed - life was easier and more enjoyable. Less pressure, and more authenticity - MEHN NOSTALGIA PLEASE TAKE ME BACK.
