Dahomei is a newer, entirely free platform created for Black African readers and writers. It is a passion project, not a business built around advertisements, subscriptions, or monetization. There are no ads, and the website is not monetized for its users.
The idea is simple: create a place online where Africans can find, read, and create stories for one another. If you are an avid reader of romance fantasy, sci-fi, or kingdom-building epics and more, you know the feeling. You search the internet, looking for a story that grips you, something you can disappear into. Sometimes you find it sometimes you don’t, they do not always look like you. Harder for (black) africans. Not often do they feature worlds, where we are the center of the universe, unburdened by the specific traumas of systemic racism or the lingering shadows of colonialism. With or without it is difficult to find much on one platform that doesn’t need much filtering.
African stories don't have to be limited.
We can have our own versions of fantastical worlds, impossible kingdoms, futuristic societies, magic systems, adventures, monsters, political intrigue, romances, reincarnation stories, mysteries and anything else writers can imagine.
And sometimes, you simply want to disappear into a story.
You don't necessarily want every story to be about racism, colonialism, harsh problems that we are given and can never evade no matter how high the status.
Those subjects matter. But they don't have to define every story about us.
There is something special about being able to enter a fictional world where the characters are Black Africans, where the people around you feel familiar, and yet the story itself can simply be an adventure.
A place where you can read about fantasy, realism, about the system, or whatever you want.
You don't even have to be a writer yet:
The idea behind this is that sometimes people have stories they would love to see written but don't have the time, confidence, or writing experience to write them themselves. A community of readers and writers interested can potentially turn those ideas into something much bigger.
There is something important to understand before visiting ManhaNovel:
It is new.
It is very much at the beginning of that process.
The community has to grow naturally, one reader and writer at a time.
That's also why writers are especially wanted right now.
